ITINERARY
Day 1: Moshi to Olmoti Crater to
Nainokanoka Camp
You
depart from Moshi in the morning and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater
Conservation Area. You will travel along the rim of the crater until you reach
the village of Nainokanoka. The afternoon is spending on a hike to the rim of
the Olmoti Crater. You will also have the possibility to visit a small
waterfall along the way. Dinner and overnight at Nainokanoka Camp.
Day 2: Nainokanoka Camp to Empakai
Crater
Today
you will meet your additional Massai guides and donkeys, who will escort you
throughout the next days. While you have your breakfast, we will start loading
the donkeys for the trek. Shortly after your journey begins. It is a scenic
hike and you will pass many traditional Maasai Bomas and cattle herds along the
way. If you are lucky you will also see wild animals such as gazelles, zebras,
wildebeest and giraffes. Today's trek is between 7 to 8 hours. Once you arrive
at Empakai Crater you will be rewarded with a remarkable outlook over the Great
Rift Valley to the west and views of Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru to the East. In
the North you can get a glimpse of Lake Natron. Dinner and overnight at Empakai
Crater rim campsite.
Day 3: Empakai Crater via Naiyobi
village to Acacia Camp
Today's
hike will be between 8 to 9 hours, you will walk to the Maasai village named
Naiyobi. During your hike, the active volcano, Oldoinyo Lengai, can be seen
from a distance. After saying goodbye to the people from Naiyobi, you will also
give your farewells to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The landscape outside
of the conservation area becomes drier and warmer. Dinner & overnight under
acacia trees.
Day 4: Acacia Camp to Lake Natron
Kamakia Camp
Today's
hike is mainly downhill and will take you 6 to 7 hours. The hike is escorted by
great views of Oldoinyo Lengai, Lake Natron and the Great Rift Valley. You will
descend down into the Great Rift Valley and experience a surreal landscape
shaped by the ashes of Oldoinyo Lengai's last eruption. Once you reach campsite
you will have the possibility to experience the nearby waterfall Engare Sero.
Dinner & overnight at Lake Natron Kamakia Camp. (We can arrange a climb up
Oldoinyo Lengai – it’s an extra day to your adventure. Just ask us when you
book!)
Day 5: Lake Natron to Moshi
After
an energizing breakfast you will have more time to explore the lake before
departing Moshi, where your trip will end in the afternoon. Transfer to Arusha
or Kilimanjaro Airport can be arranged on request.
