Zanzibar Islands Budget Travel
Location and Governance
The island
of Zanzibar is the biggest island in the Zanzibar Archipelago and is
found off the East coast of Tanzania. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania although it is semi-autonomous with its
own local government.
History and Arab Influence
The
history of Tanzania is a colourful one with various occupations throughout the
decades. Zanzibar has a strong Arab influence as a result of the slave trade,
and to this day the population is mainly conservative Sunni Muslim. The Arab
influence can be seen not only in the culture of the people but in the
architecture and design of the towns.
Zanzibar
achieved independence from British rule in 1963. The economy on Zanzibar is
reliant on spices, raffia and Tourism with Zanzibar often been referred to as
The Spice Island.
Tourism
The major
draw cards to Zanzibar are its rich cultural history, its Capital Stone Town with its winding passageways and
fascinating design, and the white sand beaches on the East side of the Island
which are some of the finest beaches in the world. Day tours to the old slave
market and the spice plantations are offered and are a must do for any visit to
Zanzibar. Beach activities include diving with dolphins, scuba diving,
snorkelling and sailing dhow trips.
Weather
Zanzibar
has great weather for most of the year. The summer heat is cooled by sea
breezes especially on the North and East coasts. The Island is warm all year
round with an average of 7-8 hours of sunshine daily.
November
does get rain occasionally but this is usually short in duration. April and May
tend to get heavier showers but this is not a daily occurrence.
Zanzibar
is a fascinating island to visit, a perfect fusion of Arab and African
influence. Zanzibar is a perfect add on to any Tanzanian Safari or as a short
stop over by itself.
