Kilimanjaro
Bordering
Tanzania and Kenya, just south of the equator is Africa’s largest mountain, and
the world’s largest walkable mountain, Kilimanjaro. With its three volcanic
cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira, Kilimanjaro rises approximately 5,895 metres
[19,314 ft] above sea level. Kibo is capped by an almost symmetrical cone with
scarps rising 180 to 200 m on the south side.
Although
you can climb Kilimanjaro any time of year, it is suggested that you avoid
climbing during the wet season between March-May. It is said that September and
October are the best months to climb!
There
are seven official trekking routes by which to ascend and descend Mount
Kilimanjaro: Lemosho, Machame, Marangu, Mweka, Rongai, Shira, and Umbwe. Of all
the routes, Machame is considered the most scenic, albeit steeper route, which
can be done in 6-7 days.
Accommodation
on the mountain is in tents which porters will pitch for you. You will need a
sleeping bag, warm clothes and walking poles. Lemosho requires approximately 9
days for proper acclimation time but offers the complete Kilimanjaro experience
spectacular scenery with a night in Kibo caldera. Marangu approaches
Kilimanjaro from the southeast and requires 5 days to properly acclimate.
Favored by many given its gradual slope and direct path, it is the oldest, most
well-established route, however tends to get very busy.
The
ascent and descent routes are the same, and is the only route that offers
accommodation in shared huts with all other climbers.
Rongai is known to be the easiest and the
least scenic of all the routes, though becoming more popular amongst climbers
because of its difficulty level and its remoteness. Rongai is a great option
for those who are visiting during the rainier months of March April and May. It
approaches Kilimanjaro from the north near the Kenyan border and requires 6-7
days.
People
who wish to trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro are advised to undertake
appropriate research and ensure that they are both properly equipped and
physically capable for the journey.
